The Treasury at the Sustainable Living Festival

16 Feb

The Treasury will be giving three free workshops at the Sustainable Living Festival this Saturday!

We’ll be putting on a taster for those interested in fixing, tweeking or re-imagining their old jewellery.

Workshops will be running from 3 to 6pm at ‘Under the Gums’, Birrarung Marr.

For more information check out the Sustainable Living Festival guide or email SLF to make a booking.

Kicking off  this Friday is also the Melbourne Bikefest.

As a lover of art and culture, who uses a bike to just generally ‘get around’, I’m pretty excited about the festival program this year.  Of particular interest is the Bikefest Bike Runway which will be showcasing local designers and fashionistas alongside their wheels of steel.

See you there!

The (Melbourne) Magazine’s Top 100, 2011

12 Dec

Wow, what an honour to be featured along side all of these amazing people!

Melbourne's most influential, inspirational, provocative and creative people for 2011

Sustainable, social and ethical change makers made up a big part of this year’s Top 100. Among them, the lovely Nerida Lennon is making a documentary on sustainable fashion and the future of the fashion industry, the talented Anisha Bhoyro is a slow fashion advocate, who’s approach to fashion involves using zero-waste design principles when designing her garments, and the forward thinking Juliette Anich, co-founder of The Clothing Exchange and creator of Urban Food Maps

'From these hands'

I’ve had a few enquiries about the quartz-crystal necklace I’m wearing in this shot. While this particular piece is a one-off, I will be making more. But as I have decided to only use second-hand crystals (that which I can pick up at op-shops, garage sales and through trusted sellers online), you may have to be patient. If you would like one of these necklaces and have a crystal you’d like me to use I’d be happy to make one to order. Otherwise email me and I’ll pop you’re name on the waiting list.

Speaking of my jewellery, I have new pieces in e.g.etal and they have a gorgeous new online store – yum-o!

And last but not least – check out my new-look website designed by the uber-talented Jacqui Lau. And my modest little BigCartel store selling Gift Certificates for The Treasury and my Little Wonder earrings made out of Sterling Silver and recycled plastic.

Enjoy!

The Treasury on Fringe Lane Channel 31

21 Jun

Some time during the middle of last year, a lovely lady named Christina Laria got in touch with me to ask if she could do a short documentary on The Treasury. I had my reservations as, The Treasury was still in its infancy, but in the end I thought ‘why not?’, its not every day you get an offer like  this. And what a lovely thing it is to see this version of The Treasury suspended in time. We’ve come a long way since then, but I’ll hope you’ll enjoying watching this version of The Treasury jewellery fixing workshops as they were in 2010.

Future Fashion Now

23 May

World Environment Day is coming up on the 5th of June, and to celebrate, the good people at the City of Port Phillip are putting on a little do!

Future Fashion Now is a showcase of Melbourne fashion designers and crafty-persons that apply environmental or social sustainability principles to their creations. It’s a free event held at the St Kilda Town Hall on Friday 3 June 4.00-7.30pm.

You can bring along clothes to swap.  And learn how to: make gorgeous jewellery from old/broken pieces (The Treasury) transform worn t-shirts into accessories; learn origami using old magazines; make a bolero from old jumpers; manipulate fabric on old garments for new effects; make sock monkeys, dolls and baskets from reused materials; and learn to knit.

If you’re planning on coming, make sure you say hi, and join me for a quick-fix. The sessions are 20 mins each – a good chance to get an idea of what The Treasury is all about.

Speaking of The Treasury, I have now added a new ‘page’ to this blog (the link is top-right on this page), with dates for the rest of the year. Spaces fill up quickly as soon as the word gets out, so if you’re thinking of joining us for a workshop, now is the time to book!

WEARIT – Exhibition and Workshops

27 Feb

Here’s a little blurb about an exhibition & series of workshops I’m presenting in March…

Young Melbourne designers, Emma Grace and Ellie Mücke invite you to be inspired by their novel approaches to making new from old.  Through the Wearit exhibition and workshops, the designers aim to facilitate a shift in the way that we consume fashion items.

You are invited to participate in a workshop, bringing along broken, un-loved and out of date jewellery and shirts to fix or re-create into something new and unique.  Simultaneously an exhibition of new works by Grace and Mücke will provide inspiration, challenge conventions and offer new perspectives.

Wearit is an opportunity to re-connect with community in a regional location and a forum to exchange skills, materials, thoughts and inspiration.  Together we can begin a mental and physical shift away from a ‘throw-away culture’. Come and visit Stockroom this March, and see how wearing the consequences of this shift can be truly inspirational.

Wearit is a participant of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival Cultural Program 2011
